Abstract
Objective: To describe our experience of biliary surgery at IIMCT hospitals.
Patients and Methods: A total of 205 patients were operated for biliary pathology and 188 patients out of these 205 patients were included in the study. Traditional open Cholecystectomy was performed in 134 (71.3%) patients and mini Cholecystectomy in 54 (28.7%) patients.
Results: All the patients were operated electively by faculty members of surgical department of IIMC. Female patients were 123 (65.4%) and male patients were 65(34.6%). Preoperative diagnosis of acute cholecystitis was seen in 18 (9.6%) patients, 7 were male and 11 female. The rest 168 (89.4%) patients presented with gall stones including 14 (7.4%) patients who presented with obstructive jaundice due to stone in common bile duct.
Operative findings showed growth in the gall bladder in 11 (5.9%), empyema gall bladder in 13 (6.9%), mucocele of gall bladder in 9 (4.8 %), CBD stones in 14 (7.5%), and acalculous cholecystitis in 9 (4.8%) patients. Duplex gall bladder was found in one patient with slough in it. Average hospital stay was 4.5 days; post operative wound infection occurred in 13 (6.9%) patients.
Conclusion: Keeping in mind the economical resources of the institution, open surgical removal of the gall bladder and dealing with the complications of gall stones has been an acceptable practice. (Rawal Med J 2004;29:53-56)
