Functional outcomes of sandwich reconstruction technique for giant cell tumor around the knee joint

Abstract
Objective: Evaluate the functional outcomes after extended curettage and reconstruction using a combination of bone graft and bone cement (sandwich procedure).
Methodology: A prospective study of 16 patients (10 females and 6 males) that fit the inclusion criteria and knee reconstruction with the sandwich procedure.
The functional evaluation was done using the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) Score six months postoperatively and one year. Also using Schatzker and Lambert Score in the last visit to assess the functional outcome
Results: The mean MSTS Score in patients was 27.13 3.030 SD (range, 20-30) and the mean functional arc of motion around the knee was 123.13 12.230 SD degrees (range, 90135 degrees) and according to Schatzker and Lambert Score 75% had excellent results,12.5 % had good results and 12.5% had fair results.
Two patients (12.5%) had a recurrence of the tumor, and one patient (6.25%) developed a postoperative fractures in the distal femur and infection.
Conclusion:
Definite and improvement in the quality of life of the patient can be achieved by using a sandwich reconstruction technique.
