Comparison between long corners and short corners in field hockey

Abstract
Objective: The main aim of the study was to compare long and short corners in field hockey and to investigate the successful and unsuccessful corners.
Methodology: Field hockey is highly competitive international sports yet there is very limited research done in this area of sports. In the field hockey corners represents the most likely situation in which goals can be scored. Six matches of German hockey team played in 2010 Hockey World cup were analyzed for both long and short corners.
Results: 40% short corners and 6% long corners were successful and main predictor of scoring goal was straight shot inside D on both long and short corners.66% direct goals and 44% deflected goals were scored on short corners.83% direct goals were scored on lifted shots and 17% shots with ball held with ground.50% goals were scored to right side of poll and 50% to left side of poll. On long corners 50%were deflected goal and 50% were direct goals. Except side of poll, goals scored, positions, shots, ball travel, no of touches and unsuccessful categories showed statistically significant difference(p<0.05) between long and short corners.6% long corners were converted to short corners.55% unsuccessful short corners were saved and 31% unsuccessful long corners were due to loss of possession and 25% due to foul.
Conclusion: Short corners have more chances of being successful as compared to the long corners. More attempts were made for direct goal on short corners.
