Association of demographic variables and tobacco addictions with psychological disorders in patients treated at tertiary care hospital, Hyderabad, Pakistan

Abstract
Objective: To explore the association of demographic variables and tobacco addictions with psychological disorders.
Methodology: The study was done at Psychiatry Hospital, Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan, from August 2014 to September 2015. It included 200 psychotic inpatients and 335 normal healthy persons. The demographic variables and tobacco addictions were collected through a standard questionnaire. Blood pressure was measured and perceived stress scale (PSS-10) and hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS-A) were used to figure out the number of patients having stress and anxiety. Analysis of data was performed by SPSS version 21.0 To associate factors with psychological disorders the odds ratios were computed by Pearson’s chi-square test with 95% confidential interval.
Results: Mean age range of psychotic patients was 25-42 years. We found that 81% psychotic patients showed stress, anxiety and hypertension. The early marriage up to 19 years of age, illiteracy, smoking, labor work, having no work and addiction of ghutka, mainpuri and naswar showed significant positive association with psychological disorders.
Conclusion: Early marriage up to 19 years age, illiteracy, smoking, labor work and addiction of smokeless tobacco were significantly positively associated with psychological disorders.
