Abstract
Objective: To determine the effects of exercise on sleep deprivation and quality of life in patients with depression
Methodology: This randomized control trial was conducted in Pakistan Railway Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan and included 90 patients recruited through purposive sampling. Patients were then assigned randomly into 3 groups; treadmill (n=30), stretching (n=30) and control group (n=30). Treatment was given for three days per week for up to 6 weeks. Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PBSQI), Quality of life Enjoyment & Satisfaction Questionnaire, and Human Cortisol ELISA Kit were used as main outcome tools . Data analysis was performed by using SPSS version 20.
Results: Out of 90 patients, 75(83.3%) were female and 15(67.7%) were male. Mean age was 39.2210.73 years. Significant improvements were noted for BDI, PBSQI and Quality of life Enjoyment & Satisfaction Questionnaire between the groups (P<0.01). For cortisol levels, no significant improvements were noted between group 1 (treadmill training) and group 2 (stretching exercise), however, with group 3, receiving medication only, significant improvements were noted (P<0.01).
Conclusion: Exercise is a good adjunct treatment for patients with depression. Exercise both in form of aerobic training and stretching decreased symptoms of depression and improved quality of sleep and overall quality of life significantly than medication alone in patients with depression.

Key words: Aerobics, Beck Depression Inventory, Cortisol, Depression, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Quality of life.
